Biography:
My name is Gibril, and I was born in Banjul, The Gambia. I have spent more than half of my life in Europe, living in vibrant cities such as London, UK, and Stuttgart, Germany. As a teenager, I moved to London, where I pursued my passion for sports science and nutrition, ultimately specialising in Rehabilitation, and pre- and post-natal exercise prescriptions as well.
Professional Journey:
After completing my studies, I took on the role of manager at LA Fitness, an exclusive health and fitness club in Queensway, London. I successfully managed the club for several years before making the decision to become self-employed, registering my own business in 2010. However, family circumstances led me to deregister my company and relocate to Esslingen, Germany, in 2012
Cultural Perspective:
Living in Europe has significantly broadened my perspective, allowing me to appreciate both the positive and negative aspects of African and European cultures. This understanding profoundly influences how I raise my children, who were born in Europe. I believe it is essential for them to engage with and learn about both cultures
Navigating Challenges:
Navigating life in Europe as a foreigner presents its challenges, particularly in language proficiency. However, I have discovered that opportunities exist, along with a sense of fairness, for those who are willing to integrate into society. My experiences in London highlighted certain advantages, including the ease of adaptation due to the English language, the multicultural environment, and established Gambian communities. I recognise that Stuttgart is evolving in a similar direction
Cultural Commitment:
It is vital for my children, who have not been born in Africa, to learn about Gambian culture, history, and heritage, fostering a deeper understanding of both their Gambian roots and European upbringing. This commitment to cultural exchange and community support is what motivated me to become involved with the Active Support Gambia Association
Vision for the Association:
In my role within the association, I aim to assist those in need by promoting cultural understanding between Germans and Gambians. I focus on providing resources for immigration-related issues and offering guidance on housing and job opportunities. Through my efforts, I strive to create a supportive network that bridges the gap between our cultures and empowers individuals in our community
Conclusion:
With my diverse background and unwavering commitment to cultural integration and community support, I am dedicated to making a meaningful impact within the Active Support Gambia Association, fostering understanding and collaboration between Gambians and the broader German community.
